It's when motorcycles ride between cars in adjacent lanes.

Aha- nice bike! I rode an F650CS during my bike lessons/test. My mate's just sold one of them and got a 2006 ZR600R. Lovely bike. Sposed to be heading for a rideout this weekend, providing my Suzi Vee is up to it (don't ask...).
So- Roadstergals quickly becoming BeemerGal!!
Lane splitting- illegal?!! Some politician is a bit jealous of bikers getting around quicker than him then!! ;D
We tend to use the term filtering in the U of K...

I really like the CS! I love the stuff bay. I'd love to have a GS with the stuff bay instead of the dry-sump oil container. I think the official term here is "lane sharing" - people tend to distinguish, casually, between "lane splitting," which is going between cars that are moving or that are stopped due to heavy traffic, and "filtering," which over here typically refers to going between cars that are stopped at a signal and getting to the front of the line. I did some filtering when I was in WA, but splitting will get you in trouble very fast anywhere but CA. CA drivers are more aware of the presence of bikers than most other drivers - I think it's due to splitting being legal. Of course, 'more aware' isn't saying much.
