Hunting should only be carried out under strict licence and then only for people who are actually going to eat what they shoot. There are still thousands of people who hunt the likes of rabbit, grouse, pigeon ligitimately for food (both trapping and shooting). I don't see anything wrong with that. We are meat eaters and if someone is prepared to shoot some of what they eat, then that at least shows some grip on mother nature. There are far too many people in this day and age who eat till they get grossly obese without any understanding where their food comes from or what it means to kill, catch or grow your own food.[/quot It should be very, very strict at the very least - though I disagree about trapping if it's those deeply inhumane traps that leave animals to die slowly - that is just inexcusable and people who do that should be banged up in my opinion. I also have serious concerns about people who go out hunting for fun. Like some of these dads I've seen being interviewed - "Hey just took ma son out on his first hunt'n expedition and he shot that deer 3 times in the head" "It was the 3rd shot that killed him but I'm real proud of ma boy there" "Next year am gonna git ma boy a sub machine gun so we can go bag a whole load of them varmants" And these scumbags who pay money to go hunting animals like Polar bears, elephants and lions etc - you certainly can't eat those. These type of people shouldn't be allowed to have kids let alone guns!

Hm.
Am I missing something here - or can you really buy an AK47 in the US without much of a problem?
As for hunting, I'm kinda in the middle. I don't believe in the senseless slaughter of animals for 'sport' - but I'm different towards rabbits, foxes, etc. These animals have (At least in Aus) caused massive amounts of destruction towards the native funa and flora - so the soon their gone the better. I find shooting them to be the best solution - but their are a lot of groups who say this should be outlawed and their are 'more humaine' ways to rid us of these pests - only I haven't seen any of their 'humaine ways' yet.
I don't think duck hunting (Or others) is much - I suppose if you're prepared to eat it then at least that's on your side. But going around and wiping out tonnes of ducks just so you can boast about it is wrong in my eyes.
And I agree with FS - just cause you've got the money doesn't mean you should be allowed to go and shot up some 'game' animals.
There should be more control over those who get these weapons.

FS, I agree that when trapping only humane traps should be used. I also agree that hunting game just for fun is wrong and I totally agree that rich sadists shouldn't be allowed to pay to go hunt polar bears or big cats or whatever too. That is totally wrong.
CT, you can buy AKs or M16s or whatever in the US, but legally they have to be engineered to semi-auto only. Fully auto firearms are illegal in the US. It is stupid that semi-auto is still legal of course. Semi-auto fires as fast as you can keep pulling the trigger, which can be still around 2 bullets per second. 120 bullets per minute (not including time to change mags of course with the standard mag size 30 rounds) is still a helluva lot of killing. Bloody ridiculous. Plus it is a fairly simple process for a gunsmith to reactivate fully automatic settings on these weapons, which is done A LOT for the gangs etc.

The standars setting on US military weapons is single shot!
The m16a2 is only avalible in single or Burst! Restricting it to single shot like RB said is pointless.

If some had the cash - they could out fit a small army - no probs at all.

Yep, it is crazy.
Hoops, weapons such as assault rifles in single shot setting are called semi-automatic. It is semi-automatic because the next round is chambered automatically (instead of with pump or bolt action where there is a physical action involved by the shooter to chamber the next round).

Interestingly I've read that Cho was taking anti depressants - just like a few other cases of people going on the rampage!
