news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/southern_counties/6939722.stmThis thing used to be a shoplifter at the shopping centre where i used to work before he got arrested for these awful crimes. Ive spoken to him and nicked him for pinching stuff. We nicked named him 'Speedy' for obvious reasons. Good riddance.

[glow=red,2,300]Such a sad, wretched and pointless waste of lives. If only some form of effective prevention treatment could be found to rehabilitate people who might commit these sorts of crimes before they harm anyone. Sure this one won't hurt anyone else now, but others will eventually do the same thing unless we can figure out the whys of these crimes, how to identify those who might do such things before they act and how to fix them.
After reading an article about how common psychopaths are (the vast majority don't murder people though many become corporarate climbers or con artists: referred to as powerpaths in the article) I realised how difficult that would be. I just hope a reasonable amount of research funding is going into the field as the justice system can only help after the fact.. a mere stop-gap measure on human callamity.[/glow]

I agree Bayne. Yep Rusti, I understand your feelings, but it'd be interesting to see why certain people turn that bad. Is it a built in rot with people like that, or extremes of sociological pressures?

unfortunately for some people that suffer with a mental illness or any other longterm illness there just isn't enough resources to carter for their needs or live in the wrong area by that i mean depending on the funding each area receives now i don't want this to turn into a free for all or a heavy debate but for e.g. over here on the street that i live if i collapse on my side of the road and an ambulance is sent for i will be taken to a hospital that is miles away from me and very difficult to get home from if i was across on the other side of the street i would be taken to a hospital that is much closer to me to get home from
the community care area is split into zones on a map and a line is just drawn through it so i'm from the wrong side of the line so to speak

I'm not so sympathetic.
Slap the bugger to a table and chop him up. Draw and Quarter the bugger then hand whats left over to the scientists to probe with sharp needles.

Rusti, you're such a liberal lol
Some of these people might have had serious problems in their upbringing, but at the end of the day they're just excuses. To blame society is just a copout. The individual HAS to take the blame and take the punishment. We all have free will and can make our own choices. These people are selfish, arrogant, cowardly, bullying scum. Have you noticed that all his victims were elderly. Surprising that in his rampage he seemed to only chose helpless people to attack.

[glow=red,2,300]If only some form of effective prevention treatment could be found to rehabilitate people who might commit these sorts of crimes before they harm anyone. [/glow] Sure, but the only effective way of doing so would be a 'Minority Report' type scenario - and that technology (if at all possible) just isn't around yet Unfortunately, the bar has dropped generally overall in the past decade or so in terms of respect for others and their property. It's only to be expected that this in turn means even lower depths in terms of the numbers of people prepared to kill for apparently no reason. We've had a number of meaningless deaths advertised in the press recently, it really makes me depressed to be a human being KR

I know one thing - there's too many people sticking up for the rights of the scumbags in society these days [ and I'm not some right wing hang em and flog em type - well I never used to be anyway ]. Look at all these attacks recently where someone's gone outside to confront gangs of youths vandalising their property and they've ended up being beaten to death. Guaranteed these useless yobbos will get away with a slap on the wrist! People with real mental issues need help but there's also too many people using that as an excuse too.

I say clone a dozen Dirty Harry's and give em carte blanche to do whatever on the streets.
Harry Callahan: Well, when an adult male is chasing a female with intent to commit rape, I shoot the bastard. That's my policy. The Mayor: Intent? How did you establish that? Harry Callahan: When a naked man is chasing a woman through an alley with a butcher's knife and a hard-on, I figure he isn't out collecting for the Red Cross! The Mayor: He's got a point.

Clint would sort em out or even Chuck [ leave the kid alone ] Norris! Of course it doesn't help when people seem to be absconding every other day from prison or in some cases not even bother to turn up for sentencing - I mean what the flip is going on?
