Thanks mate, Roman's wish was that we have a celebration, and that's what we'll do on Monday. I'm coping better than I thought, and I can be strong for the rest of the family. Thank you again, I really appreciate what you've said. It's never easy.

Beautiful pictures! Of both your grandfather and of a lovely and historic city! May I ask again which city or locals your pictures were taken?

That is the wonderful Bydgoszcz. It's where Roman was born and grew up, and where terrible things happened during WW2. There are many monuments there dedicated to those who lost their lives in the war. The whole history of the place is incredible.

Here is a nice example of change. The first photo is of the family taken in front of the Shrine outside the church in Bydgoszcz before I was born. In the photo are my Mum, my Auntie, and Zdzislaw, as well as my Nana and Grandad, and the older generation of the family who are no longer with us. The second photo is of us lot last year at exactly the same location. In a strange way, this gives me peace of heart, and I hope my kids will go there and take a picture with their future offspring in the future. Also, while we were there, Zdzislaw took us to see Roman's Mothers grave, which was a very emotional moment for him, but it gave him closure. In retrospect now, I'm so glad we went over there and did what we did. I took a picture of the grave; Like I said, the funeral is this coming Monday, and it'll bring us all together, and we will celebrate! Thank you all for letting me share this on the forum, getting all this out of my system has done me more good than I ever thought possible.

Typical, I'm always the last to write something!
First of all, may I offer my most humble condolences at this horrible & difficult time.
Brendan, I'm so sorry about your tragic loss. I've been staring at a blank message box, wondering what to write, worrying whether I'd put my foot in it or not. Your Grandfather sounds like a very clever & interesting man to have around, and its obviously hit you and your family very hard, but you and your family WILL get through the pain, I promise.
All the best to you and your family, Stuart.

Absolutely wonderful messages here, they did a world of good and I've got through the time better because of them. It makes me very proud to be part of this community. I'll close this thread now, to mark the start of a new era in my life, and the family goes on in gratitude to all that my Grandad has done for us. Thank you.
