I actually really like this one. It's not WotW, but there's something stark and weird about it. I don't know! I'm completely wrong, I know - but it makes me smile. I really don't like the Roger Dean ones. I can't imagine them moving at all organically, they look so clunky. I really dislike the hoods as well.

To be fair to Relyt, he did specify "least favorite", not "worst", and there *is* a difference. Altho I like Roger Dean's artwork-- I have a copy of his Views art book-- I would put his tripod design among my least favorites, too.

I always favoured the quasi-organic Tripod designs, and dislike the big, clunky machines as seen on the Classics Illustrated cover. Alvim Correa's design is one I'd really like if it weren't for the eyes, and the same goes for the Wayne design. I am quite fond of the Gorey design myself.

Everybody hates the Roger Dean one. It's my favorite. I love all the technical mechanical detail. Everybody says it looks like a giant mechanical chicken. Ok, but to me it looks more like a giant bird of prey.
Actually, my favorite is the one by Steve.
I guess in order of favorite to least favorite... Steve, Dean, Fussey, Trim, Spielberg, Pendragon. The Pendragon one would have been a lot better if it would have had a body instead of just a head, and if the tentacles wouldn't have been clunky chains.
(edited my favorites to include Steve Fussey's design! I can't believe I forgot that one)

Hey! don't rope me in with the Roger Dean haters, I think that design is brilliant and does not deserve to be in this list imo.

Well, as a machine it does look neat. This old thread's about personal opinion, and in my opinion it simply doesn't look like martian technology to me. It's far from the worst I've seen, and the quality of the image was not a deciding factor.
When I started this thread, I intended to see other opinions rather than the opposing viewpoints we see here. I was interested in designs that turned other people away. It was a long time ago and I didn't put as much thought into what I posted as I do now. So now I know I won't be starting a thread like this one again.

;D You are entitled to your opinion and I'll defend your right to state it..... Even if you are totally wrong. ;D I mean just look at this totally alien design and the quality of the painting. Far superior to the ones that were finally used for the Jeff Wayne album. IMO

It is alien-ish, I'll give you that. And yes, the quality is extremely good. But it doesn't look martian to me. All these pneumatics for the joints, these giant claws...It almost looks like a chicken designed a giant robot version of itself using nothing but a few construction vehicles for parts. It looks alien, yet too human/chicken.

Agreed, (cant see the chicken thing though) it does have a non-human overall shape but everything about its construction is human related, pistons, claws, pipes.

But you could say the same about the Trim design. The supporting struts are pistons The legs are pipes and the Handling Machine has claws. They both break the rules by using pivots but the Dean tripod does carry the heat ray on a jointed arm as described whereas the Trim design has a mounted gun barrel for the heat ray. I know I've turned this into a Dean Vs Trim discussion but I would have much sooner seen the Dean design on the album cover. Both machine are inaccurate according to Wells' description but I feel Dean's design is closest.

I didn't mean to sound antagonistic. Sorry if it came off as confrontational, but I think a little difference of opinion and expression of opposing viewpoints make a discussion interesting. I don't think you should shy away from making threads like this Relyt.

I remember years ago (1998 I think) I found a low res of a bookcover with the Dean tripods. It only showed the 2 on the right, so silhouettes. I then thought that the hood was actually the heat ray generator hold into the air and the body the hood... I actually like the design better like that Not a bad design. Not my favourite, but not bad. It IS more accurate then the Trim design...

I always liked the Dean ones, if only because the design was so different. Trim's fighting machines on the other hand, even though far less faithful to the text, are a lot more iconic.
They're quite like Pal's designs in that they are very recognizable and memorable.

I agree, I think that on a commercial point of view Wayne was right to use the Trim design... Back to the topic, I can't help it as I know that this picture is kind of an icon but I have never liked this Tripod design...:
