Like it says, I got me an axe. Well, an acoustic one anyway. Got to start somewhere, right? I've always fancied a good twang... and now I can twang whenever I want. Now, cos I've never played one before, I need some help getting started. I'd like to teach myself, I know loads of people do... but I would really appreciate any starting suggestions that any of the talented people out there might have. You know, websites, starting methods, helpful hints or whatever. Anyone?

Nice one, matey - good luck with it. Get Jamie to show you the main chords - that's a start then I'm sure Brendan and a few others will be a huge help.

Well... one of my flatmates knows his way around a guitar... As for the other one... What happened was that my OTHER flatmate, on hearing of my purchase of today, has set a bet.... She has bet that I CAN NOT pick out a tune on said instrument within a month from now. My musically inclined flatmate has said that this can be done. Ultimately, I have to come up with the goods or.... Oh I forgot.

Anyway, point is... I have to be pretty fuckin' convincing on the guitar within a month. On ONE tune. I don't remember agreeing to this but, isn't it always the way? Anyone who is willing to crash tutor me... over and above my flatmate who can play, is welcome to get in touch!!

For starters you need your guitar in tune. I've downloaded a great tuning prog here; www.nch.com.au/tuner/index.htmlIf you have a microphone connected to the PC, put it next to the guitar, and it will aid you to tune it perfectly.

If the guitar is already in tune, and you think of the strings as 1 2 3 4 5 6 with 1 being the thickest string closest to you, then put your 4th finger on the 2nd string between the first and second fret, and your 2nd finger on the third string on the same fret, you get my favourite chord; E minor

I know it's difficult at first, but you'll soon get the idea. We'll set a time when you can ring me over the weekend, and I'll talk you through the basic chords.
