Sadly, I read today that Sir Edmund has died after a period of illness.
Having read his autobiography "View from the Summit", I truly believe he was a great man of our times- not only the first man to be confirmed to reach the summit of Everest (and make it down again), but also the work he did for the people who live in the Himalaya (building schools, runways and generally improving the lives of thousands), his other expeditions and his very honest, direct style all struck me as a great inspiration.
In a generation struck by 'celebrity culture', I hope that we will still see those who don't just achieve a great thing, but continue to work, help others and inspire many to great deeds.
Rest in Peace
Donal

Aye, sadly missed. A true British hero - a proper celebrity when being a celebrity meant achieving extraordinary things not just sleeping with someone.
