Sorry mate, my earlier reply went Pete Tong so I deleted it. So we were talking about the Thatch. I agree... I like that saying.... Absolute power corrupts.... absolutely. In a way we had the cards then. Perhaps we need to thank the stars we did? From what we know... we could have had our Cold War in the 80's .... and perhaps we wouldn't be typing online here now. My point was that Thatch seems to have had Reagan on a leash. And I really think that's true. Thank the Gods for that because if America and Russia had kicked off, we'd have been wiped out. At that point we were just a staging post.... a massive American base, in a way. As one author put it, we were an unsinkable Aircraft carrier for the US. Powerless, on our own soil, in a war we had little say in, it could have been grim. Have you seen 'Threads'? We don't know the half of what happened... or could have... in those dark days.

Agreed, sadly we need the US, they are our closest allies and the most alike us despite our cutural differences. Perhaps our wisdom as the older nation can temper the US passion somewhat. People try to throw us into the EU melting pot but it's an alliance of power hungry elitists. it has nothing to do with you or me. All empires collapse no matter what spin you put on it. look at history, all Empires no matter what shape or form will collapse sooner or later. The Roman empire fell because they became decadent, corrupt and soft, they dropped their guard and enemies moved in and bought it down. The EU is the same, corrupt and it will one day fall. There should be natural alliances, not forced co-operation. Asd for threads that scared the p*ss out of me as a kid. Thank Gawd that never happened.

I agree with you on the empires, as well. Will we ever learn? At the moment, I doubt it. HG is still chuckling in his grave , I expect.

No! They can't do that (Though it seems they can). I can think of a lot of words to describe them (aka. 'Council') that aren't safe to reproduce here.... I hope you can think of something.

At the moment they are all 'proposals' they will have to be ratifies put to puclic viewing and so on. We are talking years before they even get to the knocking down stage. but ideas have a habit of becoming real, especially in the hands of to**ers.

Well given the time frame then, something could be thought of. What about Charles? Isn't he in the H.G Wells Society (Or did I imagine that?) - because if he is he might have a few things to say about it all.

That's a crying shame. Is there anything that can be done? community protest, petitions, outside investors, surely there must be some way to put them on notice about this action.
It happens here in the States all the time. if enough people pitch a fit and raise hell, sometimes these things can be stopped.
Perhaps we should try to organize a movement against the development?

In the big picture there are not that many of us on here to have a strong voice Maybe we could join forces with HG nuts Some one in a trust or historical area has to care about this As usual with this type of decision its all down to "brown envelopes" & not what but who you know So you out there who live in the area Who do you know ?Some of us are too far away & just feel helpless watching what would be a disgace If we can do anything tell us & we will try our best

I realise its not just about HG & that a lot more people will be affected but I just Googled Woking (& I know this is just blasting off hot air) - But how the hell can they base a whole town around the man & the knock down his house Even a conference centre is named after him - HG is shouting from every single page you turn to on Woking Fe.k all politicians

please post if there is any way we can help. Personally I am disgusted when historic areas are destroyed to make way for ugly sky scrapers. Anything I can do, I'm on board.
