You two are not doing your fellow country men or women any favours you know. I think most of the people I know would be able to tell you who wrote TWotW. They may not get the century right but...... Would they be equally baffled with some America classic authors like Washington Irving, Ambrose Bierce, Nathaniel Hawthorne or H P Lovecraft?

I meant no offense. I'm sure most Americans know who H. G. Wells was. I have had to explain Wells to some of my friends, but they understand who he was now.

Let's just say that most Americans don't enjoy classic literature. The only text most Americans enjoy is on their cell phones. Ugh...I really hate cell phone text messages. To me, the only thing worse than seeing a text message is to hear a person 'texting.' It's such an annoying sound. So yeah, most Americans hate the classics.

I think people can be too harsh on the average American calling them ignorant of other countries etc. There are some Americans yes who don't know much about what goes on outside the US but look at some of the ignorant chavs we have over here - millions of em. I saw a news team going around the streets of London asking people who Tony Blair, George Bush and Winston Churchill were. Some people didn't know and one person even thought Churchill was one of the Beatles and Bush was an ex footballer. It's Hollywood that's the main problem. I'm not for one minute saying a WOTW film that's close to Wells book would be a success but done properly and realistically it could be in with a good chance. It definitely seems to be Jeff Wayne and Paramount who are the ones stopping a decent adaptation being made.

I suppose you're right, it's me being a literature snob. you only have to watch some of the game shows on TV to realize how ignorant the general public are. ;D

Seeing as they're doing First Men in the Moon [ and if it's any good of course ] it would be great if the BBC could do an accurate version. There again, unless Jeff Wayne and Paramount let's them it probably won't happen.

(Bump)
Gatiss said in an interview last week that the Beeb did "First Men on the Moon" precisely because it's the only one of Wells' big sci-fi hitters that isn't wrapped up in Hollywood legal tape.
Personally, I'd like to see some his short stories adapted, maybe in a "Tales of the Unexpected" type Sunday night TV show. "Lark Rise to Candleford" meets "The Crystal Egg"!

And yet, Hollywood is faithful to other British classics such as Robin Hood, Sherlock Holmes and Braveheart There's not really a set text for Robin Hood or Braveheart, is there? RH is a folk myth and Braveheart ... it was as far removed from "the real" story as possible. Edward I's wife, impregnated by William Wallace himself? Really? Too much time on the whisky and not enough on the history books there, I think!

Edward I's wife, impregnated by William Wallace himself? Really? Too much time on the whisky and not enough on the history books there, I think! :)No I meant faithful in respect of local and time period. Hollywood directors keep on saying -when talking about WotWs - "The movie-goers don't want to see a period piece set in rainy old Englandshire, they would much rather see it brought up to date in shiny USA" but they are quite happy to set other movies - such as Robin Hood - in their correct local and time period. I would like to see a film version of War of the Worlds set in England around 1900 as Wells' wrote it. but apparently that's not what I want at all according to Hollywood. Trouble is if Hollywood did make a period set piece in England it would be filled with Dick Van-Dyke clones in straw boaters and stripped blazers trotting around saying "Gor-Blimy-Guvnor" and "Luv-a-Duck me old cock-sparaw" and I don't think I could bare that. Personally, I'd like to see some his short stories adapted, maybe in a "Tales of the Unexpected" type Sunday night TV show. "Lark Rise to Candleford" meets "The Crystal Egg"! Now that would be good.

I saw that too yesterday ('today' as I type this, 10:10 PM). I think that's where all the effort for the movie during the past years has gone. And still no hint of an American tour, other than a facebook petition. I'd sign, but that would mean joining facebook, which would cost me a lot of sleep. Not by constantly checking my status, but the knowledge that I share something in common with the average American young adult. In short, being one of them.
