Sometimes truth hurts. American made films are generally paid for by American business who see everything the American way...and subsequently change everything that matters and dumbs the script down to the creative and artistic level of a wall street hedge fund manager. Like I say, the truth is horrible. Just as horrible as the fact that films made in the UK tend to be London based gangster shotgun flicks where everyone says "fek mayte! that 'urt!". If WOTW is made by a big over financed company then the soul will get ripped out of it...again. If Shpeilbumf can get it utterly wrong then others will have little faith in a new version especially if most Americans don't understand the sub plots about the English imperialism and complacency. Some 23 year old wonderkid script writer will write a new version ( set in LA in 2010) and have Mom and Dad getting divorced and the Vietnam vet will be his alcoholic uncle etc..etc..Cynical?...you bet. Victorian England is a complete mystery for the US and has been since George Pal. A true version can and will be made. Here in the UK because that is the only way a non commercially manipulated version will ever get made. I apologise if this seems harsh but I for one am extremely passionate about the amount of English literature that has been spoiled time and again. Don't blame your keyboard, I agree with all you have said.

Don't blame your keyboard, I agree with all you have said. I agree, what it basically comes down to is all you've said. Producers want something for their money and they'll instruct movie makers what they want, and if they don't get what they want then they don't give out funds. It's an evil system for a film like this, but until people who have the cash and want to see a faithful adaption of the book come along and give offers there isn't really much of a chance.

Good thing I'm British eh
And it seems I may have more control over this than I thought as most of the money is being funded by my wife's business now

I am going for two options here, the first being less likely and more costly, but hopefully you'll see the advantages to option two
1: Live action pros and cons are obvious
2: Fully CG yet again pros and cons are obvious but it opens for a much wider scope of development

I think that's my wife's business And I have no reason to exaggerate Dampener all you like, I know you don't like my being aloof on a lot of things but as I said before, because of certain high demands and expectations, I will only announce that which can be confirmed. I do have a question though, why is a movie so important to this community, is it because past attempts have been half hearted or lackluster at best? Or is it just because, it has to be filmed? Did Jeff Wayne set an ear mark that neds to be bested or pushed on? What? You seem so concerned with money that I feel you miss the overall true value of what you really want to achieve. As I said before, nothing will ever beat the book

Do you have some film work on YouTube or otherwise, I'd be interested to see some of the stuff that you cut your teeth with? I'm always interested to see what any artist has done in the past.

Might be an idea to check out the future is wild series. I did some work on that The question is genuine though. Be pointless my making a film without seeing why everyone thinks it's so important Call it market research

As I said before, nothing will ever beat the book It's not a question of being just concerned money MGM. It's a question of being realistic. We're talking about an EPIC story here and epic's need a decent budget unless you can get everyone to work for virtually nothing. It has to be done properly and the last thing we want is for a film based on such a great book to look and sound cheap. That's simply not an option unless you want another joke of a film. As I said before it has to be good in all areas. Anything less is pointless. The book's a masterpiece and it deserves the best.

Be pointless my making a film without seeing why everyone thinks it's so important Call it market research I saw that series, very good, a bit like walking with Dinosaurs but looking at future evolution of the Earths fauna. Personally I'm not that bothered if a film is made or not, it could never do justice to the book and no matter how hard you try you are never going to please all the people all the time. But any film has got to be better than Hines' effort.

Be pointless my making a film without seeing why everyone thinks it's so important Call it market research I can't remember if I've seen that or not but it looks pretty good. What work did you do on it? Here's a few reasons off the top of my head why I think it's important - It's THE original alien invasion story [ I'm sure there were one or two other much less known ones before it but I can't think of them off hand ] and the best. Nobody's ever done full justice to a HG Wells story on film. We've had the 1953 B Movie which was good for it's time but it's badly dated now, less said about Spielberg's version the better, the awful Time Machine plus others. The book has some great imagery that would look fantastic on film It also has some great scenes like the Thunderchild part and the narrator catching a glimpse of the tripod in the thunder storm, plus many other scenes and set pieces like Shepperton and Weybridge, the falling star, etc, etc. Anyone who's read the book will know. I'd love to see the title WOTW reclaimed from all the other useless films we've had. Nobody's done a story with Martians invading Victorian England. Done properly and with imagination I think it would be great. Simple as that.

Here's the reality Without the right imagination you are never going to see a faithful Victorian vision of the War of the Worlds grace the blockbuster screen. This is an unfortunate reality. The only way to achieve a Victorian silver screen blockbuster would be to take several artistic licenses to the story. And I will confess my main motivator has to profit, not loss no matter how much I am a fan of the novel Prime example of successful novel adaption with so much artistic license, the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Would TLOR had been 100% faithful would it have been as much of a hit? Consider That said, it can be done, but I fear you may not like the end result. Something is always going to be missing So input, ideas, how do "WE" make this film something that not only we will enjoy but something we can and must bring to the masses. Brainstorm time people, you're all telling me about how things go bad and wrong, tell me how you think it should go right!!

Brainstorm time people, you're all telling me about how things go bad and wrong, tell me how you think it should go right!! Right......it's going to take a while to think of what it will take but here's a few starters. I see no reason why the overwhelming majority of the book shouldn't be filmed [ if anyone who wants to make this wants to cut loads of it out then I say forget it - absolutely pointless ]. I'm a big fan of PJ's LOTR films but I still think some unecessary changes were made in those - and of course WOTW isn't such a big book as LOTR so I can see very, very little that would need to be cut - if any. Maybe one or two very small things would need to be updated. I can't think off hand but I'm talking about something where modern science would need to update some description or idea that Wells wrote so it's believable for modern audiences. I'd be interested to hear what artistic licenses you think would need to happen?

My first artistic license would be to avoid the brother all together, whilst it works well in the book, it's extremely difficult to throw into a film wiithout confusing or boring the audience. Jeff Wayne pulled it off with no question's asked and pretty well I thought.
I would avoid narrative all together, and simply focus on the characters visual and emotional reaction.
I would certainly try to bring more character, even names to the characters
These are the first ideas springing to mind
