D'you know I went through the entire film without remembering that it was actually a prequal and was watching it as if it was a remake. It's very very similar to the first film, almost exactly the same infact. Very well done and very true to the original. Only at the end did I realise that it was a prequal and thought that was the 'twist' and couldn't wait to come and say only to find it was always meant to be a prequal lol. The end leads directly onto the original film with the Norwegian chopper following the dog. I really enjoyed it but was stunned to see that on its second day of release me an my girlfriend made up a total of 8 people in the entire screen watching the film! I was amazed. It deserves a lot more watching this. I thought it was going to be packed I loved a packed screen, much more atmosphere. The effects were great at times, but at other times they seemed 15 years behind the times, with bad, almost comical effects at times, but that only gave it more strength in being like the original so I didn't mind to much. At least there wasn't a huge rubber mouth with teeth coming out of someone's chest and chomping up and down like the original All in all I really enjoyed it, not sure I'd but it on DVD but glad I saw it on the big screen

I have read a number of reviews that say the same. The film, although a prequel does seem to masquerading as a remake, but I think that is down to the viewer knowing what is to happen because of the Carpenter version. But a number of scenes were very Carpenterish - such as the breaking window scene, and the one crew member having the hand-thing chomping on his face which almost mirrored the Windows scene in Carpenters.
I'm hoping that the director gets his way and releases his Directors cut. He appears not to be happy with the way Universal changed a lot of the film from his vision, including a large number of FX sequences. The film did contain a huge amount of practical. But the speedy CGI does show at times. But I personally thought the FX were very good for what was essentially a low budget film.
Universal say the DVD/blu ray will feature deleated/alternate scenes.

Jammy beggar!
I poor soul that i am had to wait till it was out in the local Asda, so got the 2 Blu Ray box set*.
Excellent films, can't understand why the prequel has had such bad reviews, esp after watching the god awful Iron Man 2 a true shitefest of the highest order.
*1982 & 2011 Versions.

I have to agree with MrG - very good and was impressed with the way everything tied in to the original at the end. Up to the last 5 mins of the film I couldn't figure out how the hell they were going to make it tie in, but they managed it. They managed to capture the essence of the original very well without directly ripping it off. The only thing I missed was the old school special effects - they relied too much on CGI for this one, but that is just a sad fact of life these days.
