Starting to piece it all together now. I've still got the rest of the unfinished buildings to do and the carts and things are still not final, some are floating/sinking .etc but here's a first draft composition. Just under 1.2 million triangles in the scene right now (1.4 with the smoothed fountain sections). I've still yet to do the road and pavement/sidewalk, (the road will be displacement cobbles) and there are still lots of details to add; like sheets hanging from windows, a few people dotted about and a horse rearing up (ignore the current horse, I just dumped it in to scale it properly and forgot to remove it for the render I've moved the building on the right round and over as it didnt suit the composition so havcing it at an angle gives the image more of a focal point having a perspective effect on both sides. The building behind the handling machine may well move over to give the claw a better silhouette but I'm not sure yet. Any crits are very welcome and will all be considered for implementation.

It's looking great. My only crit is the size of the handling machine, it look way too small to me. I imagine the body of the machine being as big as the fighting machine body and if you look at Dead London by Geoff Taylor you can see the legs of the machine tower over the roofs of the ruined houses, your machine's legs only just reach the first floor. You could either move the machine further back in the picture or make it bigger, or a bit of both. And maybe some cherubs to help give some perspective too. Just kidding. ;D

I have just looked at the original 'Dumfries High Street' photo and if you compare the size of the two ladies with the little lad (bottom left) to the guy you've got standing in the doorway behind the horse, he must be about 9ft tall, you need to scale your carts and people down a bit, this will also make the machine look bigger.

Those fat claws would make it hard to reach inside the house in Red Weed Part 2 without destroying the whole place, methinks.

I'm not sure why but I never thought to look at the original image for the size reference for the carts and people, and you're right the are far too big. doh! lol Regarding the size of the HM, yes other refs show it to be far bigger but I'm going more to the scale of the Peter Elson painting, mine is still a little smaller than that, but scaling down the people and carts will help that out some. Having it the scale of the Geoff Taylor image would make it look ridiculous trying to pick up people with claws as big as a tesco express. Thatd be like picking up grains of rice to us and harvesting them for blood. Plus I would have to model a whole city and thats just not going to happen, all youd see in myimage with an HM that big would be the belly of the machine like the independance day spaceship Its an artistic decision for composition purposes mainly. I'll have a go at scaling it up slightly but Im not modelling more town outside of what you can see and I dont want the HM taking up much more screen space. I really appreciate the input

I have to agree with Relyt, especially in the Dead London scene the scale of the machines compaired to the surroundings is very awkward.
I also think the size of the machines in all of the pictures is far to big compaired to the original descriptions....

See Mrgrotey replyed just before me The Peter Elson picture should be the best to use for scale. Nice work so far!

Looking at the Peter Elson picture and comparing the size of the people around the machine I believe this to be roughly the correct hight of a man. But I do agree with what the others say; the Handling machine in the J.W. Musical version is way too big compared to the book version. But it is the J.W. machine you are making, so if you don't stick fairly close to the rules people are going to jump up and down screaming "TOO SMALL! TOO SMALL!". So I think you're right, scaling the people and carts down and the machine up a little should do it.
