American film/tv studios are obsessed with making anything WOTW an American thing. Very true, if you ask most Americans (members of this forum excluded) if they had heard of 'The War of the Worlds'? most would say "Oh sure, that was that Orson Welles radio show back before the war" Most of them probably haven't even heard of H. G. Wells. I came across an on-line version of the 1938 radio show a few months ago and it was entitled 'Orson Welles and the Murcury Theatre Company in The Original Radio Version of War of the Worlds' Yes okay it is the Original Radio Version but to me that statement infers that Orson Welles & Mercury were the creators of the story and not just the first to air it on the wireless, nowhere did it mention H. G. Wells. I may be over sensitive about this sort of thing, but that really pisses me off. Same here. I'm not anti American but I'm anti 99% of American WOTW [ apart from Jeff Wayne - mind you I sincerely doubt we'll ever see his film and even then, it might be too cartoony and a bit kiddified ]. I mean look at the American attempts at WOTW so far - 1953 film, ok for it's time but looking back it wasn't really very good at all, Spielbergs film - the less said about that the better, Asylums films - the less said about them the better also and of course the other cheapo one which we all know about which was complete pants. Now this stupid effort. It's depressing!

Sadly, a lot of comes down to these things: money & and will power (which are interlinked more than most people would like)

We are not going to get a film version of WotWs made in the UK as long as Jeff Wayne and Ollie Records hold the copyright. Nothing can be printed or recorded about WotWs without having the statement 'If you have enjoyed this ***whatever*** you may be interested to know of Jeff Wayne's musical Version...........' and so on, and so on. So it ain't going to happen in the UK and we'll have to rely on whatever the Americans can do. It's a shame that a great British novel can't be adapted into film in the UK because JW & OR are sitting on the copyright and doing nothing about it. They should either take a Piss or get off the pot.

Totally agreed as good as the album is i will never fully respect people like Wayne, Spielberg, Hinds or others like them who just take the piss out of the fans. Would it hurt Jeff Wayne or co anyway if a proper version was made? No, because the musical is unique. if a proper WOTW was made it wont make a scrap of difference to the musical because the musical is one of a kind and people remember it for the music as much as anything else. In fact i wonder if the Tom Cruise film helped to boost Waynes bank balance? Hmmm? A challenge Mr Wayne. allow a proper film to be made in the UK. I bet it wont make a scrap of difference to you at all. Good publicity I'd say.

Good points! I don't know what the hell Jeff Wayne's playing at. 5 years he's been stringing everyone along about this supposed 48 million dollar film [ wasn't that strangely the same amount as the other cheapo effort we had by you know who? ] and just more "Jeff's very busy" "he has too many other projects to deal with" "we'll keep you informed of any updates" [ I'm not attacking the messengers by the way ] but yet absolutely nothing. I think it's quite clear now it was all a load of baloney.
The MGM pics look promising but without more info it's hard to get excited about that.

Wow! Strong word, strong feelings but I have to agree, There's a lot of talk and a lot of excuses but not a lot happening. If J.W's not going to make this film, he should give-up the film rights and let someone else have a go. Or if he insists upon hanging onto the film rights, he should act as an executive producer only and let someone else do the donkey work.

Mr Wayne he of the luminous disco pants is far too busy with his bouncy castle tour to bother with the likes of getting around to producing the film. It won't happen not in this lifetime or indeed any other d.f.

Two years behind schedule, but this film is still alive and kicking.

Just an update on the WotW Goliath film. Looks interesting. Wow, the animation is quite impressive in that trailer. I'm interested in what the full movie will be like.

I shall have to check and see when it's released. It can't be far off now it's been 3 years since I first heard about it.
