I like this cover design very much: This one is also very effective, with those silhouettes. When I first saw a (lower resolution) version of this one, I actually thought that the hood was The Heat Ray generator.

I have a secret fondness for this ludicrous effort, purely because it conjures a comedy Jeff Wayne musical scene in my mind... "Bravely - bruising - ankles - (BA BA BOW!) - THE THUNDERCHILD!" Martian: "Ow! Ow! Cut it out. Look, I'm warning you!" Thunderchild: "Hee hee!" *Dink!* "Full speed ahead again!" *Dink!* "Hoo hoo!" Martian: "Right! That's it!" And so on... Anyway, the definitive image - the one that I have lodged in my mind when reading about the martians is this one - it's one I saw as a child and garnered many subsequent nightmares from. I very much loved the Spielberg designs though, so when daydreaming about modern day invasions, that comes the most readily to mind. Otherwise, the above. I love the Correa ones as well though, for the eerie devestation and the beauty of the horror of the machines. (Now if it weren't for those stupid eyes!) I can't stand the Jeff Wayne version though, I just think it's completely non-scary. The big bug eyes make it look non-threatening and too small, and I don't like the gun. Shame, because the art in the actual thing is rather good, but the design - ugh! (In my opinion, natch)

From the missing 'Camelot' scene in Spielbergs if I'm not mistaken DF. Camelot scene? This is the famous deleted scene that has never been seen anywhere but briefly in a pre-viz cut on the DVD extras, and the above concept art. It details Ray and his daughter (I think it's post losing Robbie) creeping through a small town called Camelot, hiding behind cars and dashing across streets as tripods pluck screaming people trying to hide in houses with their probing tentacles. It is a scene I desperately wish to see, and wish very much that the rubbish and conceptually disasterous 'this is how they got here' TV News Reporter van scene had been excised in favour of it. It was filmed, but not included, because God hates me or something. I continue to love the film though, regardless, natch. Definitive version still to come, though.
