This is my fav: It inspires me. I've always liked that illustration too - it's by David A Hardy, and here's a more complete reproduction (from the long defunct Space Voyager, issue 12, Dec 84/Jan 85): For trivia fans wondering if David H based the Thunder Child on any particular vessel, well, it's pretty clear he based her on an old illustration of the sinking of the battleship Petropavlovsk (Admiral Makarov's flagship mined outside Port Arthur in 1904). Compare with this contemporary magazine illustration (which I've flipped horizontally so it's oriented in the same direction as the Hardy painting; the vessel does have two funnels, but they're obscured by the fold down the centre):

WOW! I've never seen that entire picture before, only the book cover. Pretty impressive! McTodd, perhaps you could let Dr.Zeus know the artists name. I do not think that he already has the name of the artist on his (excellent) website..

Interesting to see the painting that it was based on - never seen that before! Incidently - in the Encyclopedia of Science Fiction that I have from around 1977 - I'm sure the painting is slightly different. I'll have to look and see if I can dig it out.

I'd forgotten that I have that book too! So I checked it out this morning before leaving for work - to be honest, I couldn't see any differences, but I was very badly hungover at the time...

Hey, Fallingstar, you're right! There are two versions of the painting in the Encyclopedia of Science Fiction! There's a double-page spread on pp.18-19 which is identical to the one I posted earlier, and there's a small one on p.109, here:

Also Waste, thanks for the last image. Like FS says, I've never seen it before either.

Those concepts from the Spielberg movie are actually better than the film!
