As we all know, some movies just shouldn’t be remade...some.
What movies do you think should actually get the remake treatment? ____________ One that I think deserves a remake is “Miracle Mile”; one of the few real-time films made in the eighties, it had a good story, an excellent cast and an amazing soundtrack by “Tangerine Dream”. The production value on “Miracle Mile” was so low and the special effects so bad that they almost completely canceled out the good attributes of the film. I would love to see “Miracle Mile” get the modern-remake treatment.

I like the idea of this thread but, with regard to your choice... I liked the Miracle Mile, the ending was fabulous. But I can't seeing it working nowadays without some serious messing with the plot... *SPOILER WARNING!* - - - - - - - - *SPOILER* For those who haven't seen it, The Miracle Mile is a film about about a guy who receives a wrong number phone call from a guy at a missile silo who tells him that a nuclear war has started and that Soviet missiles will destroy the city in 70 minutes. The world is a very different place now, 20 years later and, IMO, no amount of jazzed up FX could make an outdated premise like the one behind this film work. Actually, nowadays, they'd probably have some 'everyman' (oh, the irony) like Will Smith or... dare I say it... Tom Cruise (!) as the hapless guy who tries to escape the city with his new girlfriend. It wouldn't work, to my mind. To me, the Miracle Mile was a film very much of it's time (like 'Threads' or 'The Day After').... and for a low budget flick, it's a very good one. I think it should be left alone. As I said, though, I like the thread idea a lot and I'll try and think of some films that I think could work.

One film that I think would make for an excellent remake is the 1983 film “The Keep”, you have to live the original tagline “Request immediate relocation…something is murdering my me!”.
*SPOILERS* = = = Synopsis: Romania, 1942, a detachment of the German Army is sent to guard a mysterious Romanian citadel located on a strategic mountain pass. When soldiers begin to be mysteriously murdered, the SS arrives to deal with what is thought to be partisan activity. What the SS finds, however, is an evil force trapped within the Keep and a force which will do anything in order to escape.

Yes, I agree with that. Another good film (and another Tangerine Dream score, do I sense a pattern here? ). I could bear to see that remade. Talking of Nazis and the supernatural... Not a remake, but I'd like to see 'Return to Castle Wolfenstein' (the video game) made into a movie (yes I know there was one planned but it never happened). I'm one of those who are fascinated by those Nazis-mess-with-things-they-can't-control-and-ultimately-come-a-cropper plots. But then again, if they did make it, they'd probably give it to Uwe Boll. On second thoughts, forget it, I'll play the game instead.

Well, at the risk of beating a dead horse, the #1 "remake" I'd like to see is "The War of the Worlds". But this time, I want to see it as Wells told the tale, as a period piece. In fact, it was hearing about a period production of WOTW that lead me to find and join the old forum. Unfortunately that production turned out to be Pendragon's. So here I am, two years later, having recently joined a forum to talk about SF and WOTW, looking forward to what I hope will turn out to be a good period film production of WOTW... Deja vu all over again! ;D Regarding remakes: My opinion is that, generally, if it was an excellent film, then a remake is very unlikely to be as good, so why bother? And if the original movie was bad, again why bother-- just make a brand-new film instead. Usually, the only exceptions to that rule are book adaptations that weren't so good the first time around. The two films based on LOTR, made before Peter Jackson's trilogy, are the most obvious examples. I certainly wouldn't call George Pal's WOTW a bad film, but it's not what Wells wrote by a long shot.

The Keep as a film was ok if you hadn't read the book. The book is vastly superior and also explains so much more than the film is able to. The expert suspense build up is completely lost in the film and was replaced by plain action and a needless over the top sex scene. With that said, I think someone should have another crack at The Keep. It is an utterly brilliant read, so I'm sure someone could make a better film version than that one.

Tbh, I didn't even know there was a book. I'll have to have a look out for it.

Ah! Here's a remake I'd like to see.... The Medusa Touch! imdb.com/title/tt0077921/Richard Burton plays John Morlar.. a man who can cause disasters just by thinking about them. Or can he? I think the original was great and is much underated.. I'd just like to see what could be done with a bigger budget. Problem is, Richie was so great in it... who would play Morlar in a remake? Incidentally, trivia fans.... Martin Bowers, the man who we know for making models for the aborted WoTW photo book way back, was involved in the FX for The Medusa Touch. An article, here.... www.martinbowersmodelworld.com/html/the_medusa_touch.html

All of them should be remade.
Sod it- they will eventually anyway, and it's not anything we will be able to change.
A friend has the cynical idea that it is the Hollywood studio bosses' way of laundering money past the taxman- using friends' and associated production companies- the money always comes back around...

''Besides Morlar is on here (RB) so careful what you say he might drop a catherdral on you! '' I'll tell you a little secret... (whispers) It's not really him... yes I know! You're probably right actually. It's a fine film as is.
